Last Friday, thirty employees of Crystal Dynamics, including Eric Lindstrom, Creative Director of Tomb Raider: Underworld, were laid off. A statement from Eidos Interactive states that these layoffs were part of streamlining the studio for moving forward, but they may also be connected to the disappointing sales numbers of Underworld and the money issues the company reported about last week. Since then, numerous articles have been released regarding the future of the series. While no article says Tomb Raider is over, most of them suggest that Eidos will again reinvent the series with the hopes of bringing people back to their flagship franchise. A Times Online article suggested that the game may move in a more female-targeted direction, while others have suggested it should become a Mature game (based on the ESRB rating system) to allow for more violence and a darker story. Of course, with the current game only on the shelves for two months, the exact trajectory of the series in the future is still up in the air.
